Considerations in choosing a sofa
Updated: Mar 6, 2019
The sofa is the center of any living room, or family room and the furniture piece around which the room’s décor is being created. There are many different factors that can be used to determine the best way to integrate the sofa with the rest of the furniture in a room. The following are a few things to consider.
Size and Fit
To choose the correct size of a sofa for a room, begin with a floor plan. This plan will determine the placement of all the furniture in a room in relation to one another, location, length and depth of the sofa. For best fit, pay attention to how tall are the people using the sofa. Deep seats are better for tall people, shallow seating is better for people who have bad knees or may have a tough time getting up from a seat.
A sofa can last a long time without the frame falling apart or the cushions sagging. Quality sofas are worth the investment. They are usually eight way hand tied in the factory and special attention is paid to the quality of the wood and fabric and fill.
Consider what style is suitable to you and the space and how many people will sit on the sofa. This information may determine the number of cushions and back cushion style. Comfort of a cushion is a very personal choice. Some people like a soft spring down cushion, while other may be happy with a tighter cushion.
The color of the fabric or leather is very important. The color you choose for the sofa can either match the rest of the décor or it can coordinate with certain key elements. I usually recommend choosing a fabric that is more neutral and adding color and pattern in the pillows. However, sometimes a bold color can make a statement and change the tone of the room.
Do you want a casual look and feel to watch TV and lounge or do you want a more formal look to sit, talk, entertain or just read. Do you lounge, or sit up? Loose fitting back cushions are appropriate for a relaxed look. A curvilinear tight back sofa is more formal.
Choosing a sofa is complicated. Consult a professional for more information.
